Jailhouse Rock Festival in danger

20 Nov, 2009 08:03 AM
ARARAT - The Ararat Jailhouse Rock Festival is in danger of folding unless people step forward to assist the committee in staging the event.

Now in its 16th year the iconic festival has put Ararat on the map for all enthusiasts interested in the music, dance, cars and bikes of the 1950s era.

Over its history the festival has brought thousands of people to Ararat and injected thousands of dollars into the Ararat economy.

But with an active committee of just a few people, and due to the enormous workload involved in staging the festival each year, it is in danger of folding after the 2010 event.

Festival Director Bernadine Streeter has put out an urgent call for people willing to put in the hours involved to step up and join the committee.

While the festival draws many volunteers to help run the event during the five days in March, it is people willing to put in the hard yards throughout each year on the committee that are desperately needed to keep this festival going.

''This will be the 16th year of the festival and over that period of time volunteers have come in and stayed and then for one reason or another have moved on or retired from the committee,'' Ms Streeter said.

''We are struggling to have a full committee which puts pressure on the existing committee and we haven't been able to recruit any new members.''

This is despite publicising the need for new committee members and holding expos, forums and public meetings, as well as individually targeting specific people.

Ms Streeter said the committee has built up a lot of good relationships with businesses and sponsors and also has in place a sound base of infrastructure to enable future committees to run the event.

''But it's about maintaining this and keeping it going.

''We have many great volunteers who turn up for the festival weekend and help run it, but who can't help in an ongoing situation by being on the committee.

''It's a year round job - when the festival finishes in March we start planning for the next one.''

The Jailhouse Rock Festival is a five day festival with many different components - music, dance, hot rods, classic cars, an art exhibition, a school program and a writing program.

With such a variety of activities, the committee is responsible for setting up the infrastructure, obtaining sponsorship, co-ordinating volunteers and setting up stages and venues.

There's a lot of `paper work' involved in running the festival, with council requirements to be met and `hours and hours' of work completing applications for funding.

''The festival director's job is certainly not a glamour job either, I've been cleaning halls at 2am after the functions have been on,'' Ms Streeter said.

''There are not enough people on the committee to spread the jobs around and we don't have the money to pay people to come in and do jobs such as cleaning.

''The question is, how do we keep doing it?''

Currently there is a need for committee people to take on the role of sponsorship, and also to run both the the classic car show and the motor bike show.

Ms Streeter said the festival is very much in danger of folding.

''We're all tired and wonder how we're going to keep going,'' she said.

''It's sad that in a town of 10,000 people I have to have friends from Melbourne come up and run some of the events over the weekend.''

Ms Streeter said the festival runs to a tight budget and does not `make much money'.

''But we give back to the community,'' she said, with service clubs and sporting clubs benefitting as well as accommodation and other businesses in Ararat.

The committee will next meet on Tuesday night at 6.30pm in the meeting room behind the Bendigo Bank, and anyone who believes they have the time and commitment to become a committee member is invited along to find out what is involved.
