Immunise children

25/01/2008 8:24:36 AM
REGION - In the coming week around 300,000 children around Australia will start school for the very first time, but it's not just new shoes and textbooks Ararat and Stawell parents need to remember when packing lunches and setting their children off on their first day.

Making sure your children's vaccination is up-to-to date is critical before they begin school according to West Vic Division of General Practice executive officer Sally Philip.

"The recent outbreak of Rubella (sometimes called German Measles) that has affected many babies highlights the importance of vaccination. Rubella can cause severe problems for pregnant women as well as illness in young children," Ms Philip said.

"There are different vaccinations for different ages of children and unfortunately the four year old immunisations are sometimes forgotten. This group of children are starting school and will be more at risk of coming into contact with contagious diseases.

"Completion of the four year old immunisation schedule protects children against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps and rubella.

"Completing the childhood immunisation program will help ensure all of our children in the Wimmera are protected."

Ararat and Stawell general practices and councils are able to provide valuable advice about the types of immunisations that are required at what age.

Ararat GP Mark Deary reminded parents that immunising their children benefits everyone.

"By getting a percentage of the population immunised, it protects not only the individual but the whole community," Dr Deary said.

He suggested parents who are concerned about possible side effects or reactions should speak with their GP, practice nurse or maternal and child health nurse.

"We will fully inform parents of the benefits and possible reactions when immunising children," he said.

Ms Philip congratulated the parents, GPs and local councils for the high percentage of children being immunised in the West Vic area.

"Our district has consistently been in the top five of the nation's childhood immunisation list since 2004. This is extraordinary and shows that vigilance and teamwork can make a difference to family health," she said.

"I would encourage parents to visit their GP and talk about the required immunisations before sending their children off to school."

Call your GP, nurse or local council to book an appointment or for more information.

The Division's network plays a fundamental role in providing immunisation solutions through general practice.
