ARARAT - A 19-year-old Ararat man had his car impounded by police after they found more than bags in his boot in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The P1 probationary driver was allegedly travelling at 150kmp/h along the Western Highway at Langi Ghiran when he was intercepted by police at about 12.15am.
Acting Sergeant Shaun Allen from Ararat Highway Patrol said officers checked the Holden Commodore and found four other occupants in the car, along with two people travelling in the vehicle's boot.
Act. Sgt Allen said the driver was interviewed in relation to a number of driving offences, including conduct endangering life, speeding and driving outside licence conditions.
He said the driver's car had been impounded for 30 days and he is expected to be charged on summons.
The two passengers located in the boot are expected to receive penalty notices for travelling in a part of a car not designed for the carriage of passengers.
"Obviously it's a situation where there's stupidity on behalf of the driver, but we also have to look to the passengers to hold some responsibility," Act. Sgt Allen said.
Act. Sgt Allen said the situation was a disaster waiting to happen.
"That part of the highway is lined with trees and there is also a lot of wildlife," he said.
"One minor swerve could have put the car into the trees."
Act. Sgt Allen said with seven local young people in the car, the outcome could have been much worse - Especially considering the driver was inexperienced and travelling so fast.
