ARARAT - Marian College student Grace Reid has won the regional division of a state-wide public speaking competition co-ordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
For 32 years the Plain English Speaking Award has provided young people from government, Catholic and independent schools the opportunity to express themselves on topics for which they have a passion.
It is a great example of the range of programs offered to Victorian students to provide them with broad educational opportunities.
This year the students' topics covered a broad range from racism and environmental issues, to reconciliation and international current affairs.
The students prepared and presented a six-minute speech on a topic of their own choice, and also gave a three-minute impromptu speech on a topic set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority who co-ordinate the awards in Victoria.
Grace presented on the topic of `Ethical Shopping'.
Grace and the other winners of the 28 Victorian regional finals are competing today in the state semi finals.
The eventual winner of the state final will compete against other state and territory finalists in the national final, to be held in Adelaide in August.
There were 208 Victorian students who entered the Plain English Speaking Award this year.
