Girls ready to launch

03 Nov, 2009 08:52 AM
ARARAT - After honing their skills and building up a following from performances at weddings, birthdays and Ararat Hotel's open mike nights, Chantic is ready to charm a wider audience.

Ararat's all-girl group is gearing up to launch its debut album, First Time Around, on Friday November 13 at the Russell T White Raceway.

The talented trio, comprising the Frichot sisters Tegan, 15, and Rearne, 14, and schoolmate Brodie Smith, 14, have been performing together for two years and are regulars on the Ararat music scene.

First Time Around was recorded live at Redwood Studios in Ballarat over two days before being produced in Melbourne with the assistance of Rod Harris.

The costs were partially covered by the studio voucher the girls received for taking out the Battle of the Bands competition at this year's Jailhouse Rock Festival.

While it would be easy for anyone in Chantic's position to become blinded by stars in their eyes, the girls remain level-headed.

''We just want to have fun with it,'' Tegan said.

According to Rearne the girls are simply looking forward to sharing their music with a larger audience.

''We just want to get it out there,'' Rearne said.

''Although it would be the best thing ever getting paid for something you love.''

Besides being capable musicians and singers (Tegan plays bass, Rearne lead guitar and Brodie drums), the girls from Chantic write their own material.

''At the moment we have over 20 original songs but we chose our best nine for the album,'' Rearne said.

While the girls describe First Time Around as having a 'country flavour', they are quick to point out it is not a country and western album.

''We like all kinds of music,'' Tegan said.

The girls cite Taylor Swift, Kasey Chambers and Kelly Clarkson as major influences and are also inspired by megastars Beyonce and Pink.

''And Dad, he's been a big inspiration for us too,'' Rearne said.

The Frichot sisters have been around music all their lives.

Their father Mick is a member of local band Bittersweet, which will be a supporting act at next Friday's launch.

Well-known duo Parso and Dave will also treat the audience to a few songs.

The launch kicks off at 8pm.

Entry is $10 and includes a light supper.

Tickets are selling fast, but a limited number are still available from Jax Clothing, 5352 4699.
