ARARAT - Darcy Hastwell has spent the past month preparing for her first Murray to Moyne cycling challenge.
The year 10 student at Marian College is a member of the East Grampians Health Service contingent and is looking forward to this year's 525-kilometre relay from Swan Hill to Port Fairy.
East Grampians Health Service has been involved in the event for a number of years and is currently raising money for the purchase of an exercise ECG machine ($16,000) and software for the acute hospital.
Vital funds raised will also go towards supporting the hospital's emergency department.
A member of the Ararat and District Cycling Club, Darcy is enjoying doing something she loves for a good cause.
''I'm doing a class called Sport and Recreation at school, and we have to do so many hours of community service as part of that,'' she said.
''It's great to be able to do something I enjoy and to be helping people out at the same time.
''I am looking forward to it, but it will be a challenge, especially as the days will be long - we'll be getting up early, riding during the day and staying up late.
''Also, I've never ridden on those roads before, which makes it a bit harder.''
This year's event will be a family affair for the Hastwells with Darcy's father Ian also riding in the challenge.
''My parents are coming and some of their friends, so it will be a good chance for us to catch up and enjoy something social as well,'' Darcy said.
All those involved with the relay are making a real effort to participate in the event, volunteering time, effort and going to personal expense.
They have also made a commitment to canvassing around Ararat and District for donations to assist the health service.
Many local businesses, organisation and individuals in the community have again pledged their support with everyone involved in the relay assisting the fundraising efforts.
''I'm planning to do something with school like a sausage sizzle, or something like that, to get them to help out,'' Darcy said.
''I'd really like to encourage people to make a donation if they can.''
Donations to EGHS's two teams, the Cranks and the Defibrillators, are very much appreciated with donations of $2 and over tax deductable.
Donations can be sent to East Grampians Health Service, attention: Dianne Radford, PO Box 155, Ararat.
