Council paypackets adopted

03 Jul, 2009 09:06 AM
ARARAT - Ararat Rural City Council has agreed on councillor and mayoral allowances.

At the May meeting Council gave notice of its intention to set the councillor allowance at the current level of $16,112 per annum and the mayoral allowance at $48,336 and invited submissions from the public.

No submissions were received and at a special meeting this week council adopted the proposed councillor and mayoral allowances.

Cr Ian Wilson said it was a procedural motion.

''The Municipal Association of Victoria in consultation with the Local Government department went through an extensive review of councillor allowances last year,'' Cr Wilson said.

''Quite a number of councillors across the 79 councils across Victoria participated in that extensive survey and that information formed the basis to the changes it proposed to councillor allowances.

''The allowances, as presented, have been set by the Minister for Local Government and his department and therefore I support the recommendation.''
