ARARAT - The Green Hill Lake Management Committee has taken a giant leap towards securing government funding after a generous donation from two community groups.
Chairperson Cr Gwenda Allgood accepted a cheque from Ararat Y's Men and Y's Menettes which will help the committee to cover public liability costs and become an incorporated body.
Once incorporated, the committee will be able to apply for grants and funding to improve the lake and its surrounds
Cr Allgood said she was thrilled to see the committee moving forward.
''It has been such a catch 22 because we can't do anything until we are incorporated,'' she said.
''It's important to be incorporated and have public liability because we can't have one without the other.
''We are really not allowed on the site to do any work until we actually have that public liability cover so the incorporation and that go hand in hand because as soon as you do one you've got to do the other.
''That was why we were so desperate to actually get it done.''
Cr Allgood said the committee wrote to several businesses in Ararat for assistance before the Y's Men and Y's Menettes came to the rescue.
''Our committee is incredibly grateful to the Y's Men and Y's Mennettes for this donation which they have certainly worked hard for over the years at local fundraising efforts,'' she said.
''These two groups work tirelessly for Ararat and groups like ours to assist us to fulfill part of the dream to make improvements at the lake.''
The Ararat Y's Men and Y's Menettes have had a long association with Green Hill Lake.
Over the years they have been responsible for beautifying the area by planting and watering trees.
Y's Menettes' president Krystyna Stigger said the group thought it fitting to continue its support of the lake.
''I suppose in one way we have had a bit to do with the lake as a few of us came out and planted trees here,'' Ms Stigger said.
''The men, women and even children came out here and watered the trees in the drought.
''It's just a really nice place to go and we wanted to put something back into the community.''
It has been over 12 months since the management committee expressed its desire to control the future of Green Hill Lake.
Once officially incorporated, committee members will aim to make Green Hill Lake a more attractive area for tourists.
Cr Allgood said management's vision was to realise the full potential of the lake and put Ararat on the map by encouraging tourists to stay in the area for longer.
''One of the first things we need to do once we become incorporated is to look at grants because there are a number of grants out there that I'm quite sure we will qualify for,'' Cr Allgood said.
''The members of the committee have this incredible opportunity now to work toward improvements and turn this area into a more attractive place for tourists and to make one of our dreams come true.''
Cr Allgood said the lake was an important part of Ararat and deserved to be maintained for the benefit of the community.
''The amount of people who walk to the lake and around the lake is incredible,'' she said.
''You cannot drive past the highway without seeing somebody there and you cannot come to the reserve without seeing someone sitting here, camping or reading a book.
''Already I am told that people from Ballarat are travelling to the lake so to me that proves how valuable the lake is to the future of Ararat and tourism.''
The committee's next step will be to contact the State Government to seek recreational water.
It will also look to decrease the surface area of the lake to benefit other areas.
''The Lake Bolac Pipeline is just across the way and almost joins the lake, Cr Allgood said.
''One of the thoughts of the Green Hill Lake Advisory Committee is that if we can make the surface smaller and get more water into the lake it will flush down to the Hopkins River.
''So we are not being selfish in saying we need all of the water for Ararat, we are thinking of other people that need it.
''If we get that recreation that will benefit the Hopkins River.''
With various improvements on the horizon the future of Green Hill Lake looks bright.
A number of young people have signed up to the committee and are dedicated to making things happen at the site.
Organisations have also demonstrated their support for the project.
Cr Allgood said she was thrilled with the way everything was working out.
''At the moment you've got every organisation around here involved,'' she said.
''It's a huge reserve and there are just so many positive steps that can be taken to make it something fantastic.
''The lake is certainly holding its own. It's not dry, it's nowhere near dry and that's one of the secrets to the lake.
''It won't dry up in a few weeks you just have to look at the water that's there now.''
