ARARAT - While these boys in blue may look like they are auditioning for Underbelly 3, they are actually sporting dodgy moustaches for a different reason.
Nine members of Ararat Police are working to change the face of men's health by participating in `Movember'.
The annual, month-long celebration of the moustache highlights men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.
During Movember, each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men's health.
Last November, 125,000 men across Australia grew a moustache, raising over $8 million in donations for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and beyondblue, the national depression initiative.
Many are unaware that over 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia, which is equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.
They are also unaware that one in eight Australian men will experience depression in their lifetime.
A large number of these men fail to seek help.
''Movember is a great way to raise awareness of men's health issues,'' Constable Glen Melder said.
''We thought we'd have a bit of a laugh at the same time as raising money to support these important causes.''
While female members of the squad are unable to participate for obvious reasons, they have jumped on board as Mo Sistas, and will provide support throughout the challenge by assisting with fundraising.
People can show their support for the Mo Bros by donating to the Movember Foundation or more specifically to the Ararat Police team, Modus Operandi 3377, by visiting www.au.movember.com or calling 1300 GROW MO (4769 66).
To date, Movember has raised $60 million globally for the fight against prostate cancer and depression in men.
More importantly, as a direct result of Movember, male awareness of health issues has improved, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
