Celebrating what it is to be a woman

28 Apr, 2009 09:12 AM
ARARAT - A packet of incontinence pads on every seat in the Ararat Performing Arts Centre set the stage for what was a night of 'extreme laughter' for those who attended Menopause the Musical at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre.

Whether you were a teenager saying 'Eeewwww', a pre menopausal woman thinking 'Is that what I'm in for?', a menopausal woman yelling 'I hear ya sister' or a post menopausal woman wisely commenting 'Been there, done that girls' - there was something for all ages in Menopause the Musical.

Such was the popularity of the show that it sold out weeks ago, with a waiting list for those who missed out.

A few brave men (count them on two hands) turned up, but one wonders if they knew what was going on. The older gentlemen with menopausal wives - perhaps - the younger ones, well, let's just say the looks on those few faces were rather bemused, or was that confused?

Full of catchy tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s, reworked with fantastic lyrics, the show was peppered with hilarious songs.

'Heatwave' with the lyrics 'I'm having a hot flush, a tropical hot flush, my personal summer is really a bummer, I'm having a hot flush' is just an example of the clever lyrics, which saw 300 women howling with laughter throughout.

In Menopause the Musical we met four women shopping at Myer in the Bourke Street Mall, who gathered on each floor to commiserate and also celebrate the various challenges of 'the change'.

Played by talented actors Maria Mercedes (powerwoman), Vivien Davies (the soap star), Carolyn Waddell (earth mother) and Angela Ayers (Dubbo housewife), each brought their own magic to the show.

Every floor of Myer, and consequently every song, touched on a different aspect of surviving menopause, and every scene brought the house down.

It's rare you spend an entire night laughing so hard your sides hurt, but this was one such night.

Thanks to the women on stage, women of all ages were able to have a laugh at themselves and at what it is to be a woman - the good and the bad!
